Agnes Bojaxhiu (1910–1997) was born in Albania. She joined the Loreto Sisters in India, teaching wealthy girls. But on a train to Darjeeling, she heard a “call within a call”: to leave the convent and serve the “poorest of the poor” in the slums of Calcutta. For 50 years, she and her Missionaries of Charity picked up dying people from the gutters, gave them a bed and a name, and helped them die with dignity. She experienced a deep “dark night of the soul” for almost all those decades, feeling no consolation from God, yet she never stopped serving.
