This has pushed mainstream LGBTQ culture away from the "born this way" deterministic narrative (which focused on biology) toward the "I affirm myself" narrative (which focuses on agency and joy).

Much of contemporary internet slang and pop culture vocabulary—terms like "spilling tea," "throwing shade," "work," and "reading"—originates directly from Black and trans ballroom communities.

Culture changes fast. Kindness does not. You do not need to understand every nuance of gender theory to hold the door open for a trans person, use the name they ask you to use, and vote for policies that keep them safe.

The consequences of these restrictions are dire. The San Francisco Community Health Center reported in September 2025 that bans on gender-affirming care “not only defy medical evidence, but result in rising suicide rates, skyrocketing healthcare costs, and widening disparities”.
