Through this kaleidoscopic approach, the reader never gets a single, definitive version of events. Instead, we see the same moments from different, often contradictory, angles, piecing together the truth like a detective. This technique brilliantly illustrates how personal memory is shaped by trauma, ideology, and the relentless passage of time.
The novel centers on two periods: (the year of Stalin’s death, leading to a brief ‘thaw’) and 1983 (the grim, paranoid present). The protagonist, Ana, returns to the provincial town of Tîrgu Ocna after decades away. She reunites with old friends – teachers, lawyers, party members, and dissidents. Through a brilliant use of stream-of-consciousness, internal monologues, and multiple perspectives (often compared to Virginia Woolf or William Faulkner), Adameșteanu dismantles each character’s memory.
